2017 Summer Camp comes to a close

Summer Camp 2017 comes to a close today after an action packed week both on and off the ice. 47 young athletes from across Scotland developed their curling skills while having a lot of fun under the supervision of a top class coaching team; Gina Aitken, Kirsten Brown, Robin Brydone, Allen Coliban, Iain Fraser, Rachel Hannen, Sophie Jackson ,Bruce Mouat & Marion Murdoch.

Daily on ice sessions were complimented by additional activities including hill walking, climbing, rounders and even a very competitive scavenger hunt!

The campers also headed to the classrooms to continue their athlete development; Brown Ferguson (sportscotland Institute of Sport) spoke to the group about a ‘Performance Lifestyle’ & Tony Zummack (Head of Coaching Scottish & British Curling) talked through the ‘Technical Profiling and Tactics’

The group managed to get a little preview at the new National Curling Academy (NCA) and many are aspiring to become part of the Performance Programme utilising the NCA.

Thursday evening was the highlight of the week for many campers as we welcomed 12 performance athletes to our camp for ‘Athletes Night’. The campers teamed up with athletes to compete in five 1 end games in a bonspiel format.

The final day was rounded up with a fun hot shots competition on ice followed by Group ‘Olympic Presentations’ with some very impressive team performances incorporating dancing, acting, singing and entertainment.

The coaches awarded international playing tops, which were donated by athletes, to 2 campers from each group. These were very prestigious awards based on the campers input to the week however it was highlighted by all the coaches that each and every one of the campers had contributed hugely to a successful camp.

Here are a few quotes from this year’s campers:-

‘I like the coaches as they were fun & supportive. They took time out of their days to help us perfect our slides’

‘I loved the training from the pros and the social aspect’

‘The coaches were AMAZING. They were really helpful and worked well with our group’

Camp Co-ordinator & RCCC’s Development Manager Ailidh Hood thoroughly enjoyed her first experience at summer camp and said:-‘What a fantastic bunch of coaches and campers to spend the week with. Everyone was willing to work together and the teams were fiercely competitive at all activities. Thanks to everyone who supported the camp and I look forward to hopefully welcoming many back next year’
