Asham U14 Slam: Scott Lockhart Skips Home Team To Success
The third and final event of the Asham Under 14 Slam was held at Curl Aberdeen on Saturday. In the round robin sections, teams skipped by Lewis Leslie (Kinross), Scott Lockhart (Aberdeen) and Callum Kinnear (Perth) qualified from their sections with 3 wins from 3 games. Section A was closer with Adam Keron’s team from Edinburgh and Jenny Holl’s team from Stirling both finishing with 2 wins; Adam’s team progressed to the semi-finals with 2 more ends scored.
In the semi-final, Lewis Leslie’s team scored in the first two ends but a score of 4 for Callum Kinnear’s team in the 3rd end proved too much to come back from. In the other semi-final, it was a closely fought affair with Scott Lockhart’s team finishing 3-2 winners.
The 3-4 playoff was a very aggressive game with lots of stones in play. Lewis’ team of Craig Barr, Beth Farmer and Kirstin Bousie were 3-1 down going into the last end but piled stones into the house and closed up the centre area leaving it difficult for Andrew’s team to get in to lie shot. Lewis’s team scored a 4 in the final end to finish 5-3 winners.

It was once again to be a Kinnear v Lockhart final, the two teams having met each other in the final at Stranraer in January. On this occasion, it was to be Scott Lockhart’s team that were the dominant force early on. They found their draw weight early and Scott played a lovely double in the second end to put the pressure on. A couple of missed shots allowed Callum’s team to take a 2 in the third end to go 1 down into the last end. A steal of 1 in the 4th end levelled the score at 3-3 and an extra end had to be played. With Callum’s last stone, he attempted a hit ‘n’ roll behind a guard however he hit on the nose leaving an open hit ‘n’ stick for the game. Scott played the take-out to perfection and his team of Alastair Torrance, Rory Young and James Craik were worthy winners.

The Asham Under 14 Slam 2012-13 champions are Callum Kinnear, Gavin Hay, Ben Cormack and Mark Watt. They have had a fantastic season winning two of the three events and finishing runner-up at Curl Aberdeen on Saturday. They have played consistently throughout the season and are deserved champions. The boys received brushes courtesy of Asham and trophies as pictured.
Many thanks must go to Curl Aberdeen for providing great ice conditions and catering for players & spectators.
Thank you also to Albert Middler for umpiring Saturday’s event!
