Asham Under 14 Slam Packs Perth

The first Asham Under 14 Slam event of the season was held at Dewars Centre, Perth yesterday, Sunday 21st October.

The ice rink was packed with 16 teams as well as parents, grandparents, siblings and friends in attendance to show their support. A great display of curling was provided in a timely manner which pleased umpire Christine Shaw.

Qualifying for the semi-finals were group winners Callum Kinnear (Perth), Amy Bryce (Borders), Liam MacLeod (Inverness) and Leanne McKenzie (Perth) along with their respective teams.

The speed of the ice was a little slower in the semi-finals and the Kinnear & Bryce teams adapted better, securing themselves a place in the final – the finalists pictured L-R: Angus Bryce, Caitlin Jones, James Hair, Amy Bryce. Callum Kinnear, Gavin Hay, Ben Cormack, Matthew McKenzie.

The final was dominated by Callum Kinnear, Gavin Hay, Ben Cormack and Matthew McKenzie with Callum himself playing a lovely double take-out in the 4th end to lie in shot position. Amy Bryce’s last stone of the game was played and judged perfectly to finish in the 4 foot circle and the game concluded at a score line of 5-1 after 4 ends.

The individual curling challenge of the day was to ‘draw the shot’, however there was an added complication of having to wear a blindfold! The challenge winner was Annabel Skuse from Stirling who finished in the 12 foot and 8 foot circles with her two stones. Annabel is pictured wearing Eve Muirhead’s t-shirt which she was presented with.

Upcoming Asham Under 14 Slam events will be held in Stranraer on Saturday 19th January and in Curl Aberdeen on Saturday 2nd March. Spaces are still available and entry forms can be downloaded from here.
