Asham Under 21 Slam – Greenacres top spots claimed

The first Asham Slam of the Under 21 series took place on great ice at Greenacres this past weekend, with Team Jackson winning the Women’s section, while Team Bryce claimed the Men’s top spot. WCF stones on the B side proved reliable and consistent with few problems.

After some excellent team displays, a really good semi-final berth was secured by Team Dakers. Also through to the final day was Sophie Jackson and her British Curling performance squad, Team Amy MacDonald and her new line up and the tough to beat foursome of Team Karina Aitken. Amy took Karina all the way and in a game she might have won, but Aitken converted the steal at seven to go to the final.  Jackson overcame Dakers 4-3, converting her two at the first, but a steal in the fifth from Dakers pushed the British Curling squad all the way.

jackson_webThe women’s final saw a dress rehearsal for the World B Junior play off. Jackson edging it, again converting her two at the first with hammer, Aitken closing with a two in the fifth, but the sixth killed it with Team Jackson (pictured left) again taking two.

In the boys semis the Academy teams of Carson (pipping Team Baird on ends for the second qualifier spot in their section) and Whyte (minus Ross on the Sunday, with Bobbie Lammie subbing) faced up in one semi. A big start saw Whyte run away with it after taking three then stealing a further three. In the other semi, British Curling performance Team Bryce, hot off the win at EJCT Braehead, saw off Team Cormack (who qualified from a tight section, again on ends), the ultra-aggressive Bryce approach – take three, steal two, steal one – saw them run out 7-1 winners.

bryce_webSo a repeat of the Braehead final again at Greenacres, but the same result with Bryce seeing off Whyte. After Bryce stole in the fourth to go two up – with the draw from Bobby just two inches short of the button – Team Whyte tried to get back into it, but lost a four in end six when Bobbie was heavy trying to hide round the centre guard with his last stone and Cameron was able to draw for four and the win for Team Bryce (pictured right).
