Ayr Retain Morton Trophy at 50th Anniversary
The 50th Anniversary of the Morton Competition took place on the 8th March 2016 at Fife Ice Arena, where Ayr once again took the title.
Everything was in place for the arrival of the teams, an entrance decorated with golden daffodils and a welcome from a young piper. There was also well prepared ice, which was enhanced by the support of Gail Munro from Stranraer. Welcome bacon rolls and coffee were served as well as a warm welcome from the members of Kirkcaldy Ladies Centre (KLC). After the meeting with Umpire Harry Mitchell the curlers were piped onto the ice to be welcomed by the KLC President and play commenced after a photo session to record the event.
The players from the North were represented by Aberdeen, East by Kinross, West by Lanark and the South by Ayr. After intense play there were decisive wins from Kinross and Ayr to go forward to the Final.
As the curlers and supporters entered the Curlers Lounge for lunch they were treated to a glass of Prosecco to toast the Morton Anniversary, this was preceded by the cutting of a Celebration Cake by long standing member of the Arena, Ann Turnbull, proudly wearing her Fifty year medal. Ladies Branch President, Marion Fraser, welcomed all to the Centre, highlighting the success of the Morton over the past 50 years.
Play continued with the Final in the afternoon and the winning team was again Ayr taking two of the three games. The Ladies Branch President, Marion Fraser presented the trophy, pennant and pin badges to the Ayr team as well as a specially commissioned plate highlighting the Ice Arena and reflecting the history of the Morton family
All players headed home full of bonhomie and, not least of all, the tray bakes, scones and pancakes provided by the committee and members of the Committee, all in all it was deemed to be a great celebration of the 50 years of the Morton Competition.
