Curling this weekend: from 31st March

The City of Perth Ladies International is a new Curling Champions Tour event being held 31st March – 3rd April at Dewars Centre, Perth. It has been organised by the same team who run the Mercure City of Perth Masters, and has the support of Team Muirhead. Teams from Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Canada, England, Sweden, Japan and Norway are all competing.

There are also several Scottish teams taking part, including Team Muirhead, who are fresh from the World Women’s Curling Championships, and Scottish Junior Curling Champions Team Jackson. Other local teams include Scottish Curling Championship finalists Team Gray (pictured right), and fellow podium potential Team Flemming, as well as Team G. Aitken, Team K. Aitken and Team Murray.

Following the success of the Perth Masters, there are several games being shown live on BBC Alba over the four days, with a focus on the Scottish teams competing. For featured games click BBC Alba. Find the games listed in the date menu on 31st March and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd April.

The Latvian Mixed Doubles Curling Cup 2 takes place 1st – 3rd April, at Kerlinga Halle, Riga, Latvia. The event of the same name held last week was so popular that entry was extended to create a second competition on two consecutive weekends.

There are 12 teams taking part, including Scottish Mixed Doubles Champions Bruce Mouat and Gina Aitken. The Scottish duo will be looking for some practice ahead of the World Mixed Doubles Championship being held in Karlstad, Sweden from Saturday 16th April, where they will represent Scotland.

StoneThe National Virtual Club Challenge takes place at intu Braehead on Saturday 2nd April. The competition is open to all RCCC affiliated Virtual Clubs which incorporates members who are in the first two years of curling and is an invaluable opportunity for curlers to gain some competitive experience. The Virtual Club initiative has been a remarkable success with retention rates being very high and with great feedback from members.

A total of 28 teams from 16 Virtual Clubs from across Scotland will be taking part in the competition which will be played in two sections of fourteen teams. Each team will play three pre-drawn games followed by positional play-off games.

JuniorsAnother event aimed at new curlers is the Newcomers Trophy, which takes place on Sunday 3rd April at Greenacres Curling Rink. This competition is open to curlers aged 16 or under and targeted at those in their first or second season of curling. Although everyone taking part in the competition enters on an individual basis, participants will be grouped together so that they can meet new people and form new friendships.

Once again there is a very strong showing from Greenacres, who have an impressive 13 curlers competing at the event this year. In total there will be 18 teams taking part in the competition split over three sections.

Teams are guaranteed a minimum of 4 games of 3 ends. After the completion of preliminary rounds, the top four teams will play for the High Road Finals and the teams finishing in 5th – 8th places will compete in the Low Road Finals.

The 2016 World Men’s Curling Championship are commencing Saturday 2nd April in Basel, Switzerland. As Scottish Curling Men’s Champions Team Brewster will be representing Scotland at the championship. A full preview is available at Brewster’s Men in Basel as World Championship awaits.
