Diamond Jubilee year marks 60 years of USA/Scotland Curling Tour

On 27 January 2012, a 20 strong American men’s team representing United States Curling Association (USCA) club curlers will touch down in Glasgow for a three week long curling tour of Scotland in a bid to wrest back the coveted Herries Maxwell Trophy.

The Herries Maxwell Trophy is played between Scotland and the USA with touring parties travelling to play alternately for the trophy on a 5-year cycle. The first Tour took place with the USA travelling to Scotland in January, 1952. The last Tour was in 2007 when the Scots visited the USA and brought back the trophy. It had been 30 years since the Scots had last gained possession of the Trafalgar vase, the US having predominated over the previous five encounters.

The tour will start off in the west with a welcome and warm up game against the victorious 2007 USA Scots tourists at Braehead on Saturday 28 January. From there, matches will be played across Scotland taking in Hamilton, Dumfries, Lockerbie, Stranraer, Kilmarnock, Ayr, Greenacres, Braehead, Stirling, Perth, Kirkcaldy, Kinross, Forfar, Dundee, Aberdeen, Elgin, Inverness, Kelso and Murrayfield.

Alan Sloan, Tour Convener comments; “Stopping off at most of the curling facilities in Scotland will allow our visitors to sample not only ‘Scottish’ curling, but the spirit of the game in our country, and the hospitality and lifestyle that we take all for granted.”

He continues; “A full programme of activities – on and off the ice – has been arranged for our guests, and it is hoped that as many of our club curlers around the country will take the opportunity to welcome the tourists at their local ice rink, cheer on the good shots played by either side, and join in the festive atmosphere of bonhomie and curling friendship.”

The destination of the trophy will be decided on an overall ‘shots up’ basis over the 35 matches planned against the Scottish Province curlers over the three-week period. Some 147 games of curling in total will count towards the final score. Click for live total match score updates.

A final friendship game against a Royal Caledonian Curling Club side will then be held at Murrayfield on Sunday 19 February followed by a Farewell Banquet at the Braid Hills Hotel when the destination of the Herries Maxwell Trophy for the next five years will be announced.
