Four talented junior curlers put through their paces at BOA Multisport Camp this week!
Duncan Menzies, Robert Fawns, Rachel Hannen and Rowena Kerr along with coach Brad Askew make up some of the 23 athletes and 6 coaches from 9 Winter Olympic Sports at the BOA Multisport Camp at Loughborough University, the site of the holding Camp for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
It is an intensive 5 days in a “Games” environment where they must wear accreditation at all times, GB Team kit, adhere to daily hydration testing, and operate to a strict schedule. Each athlete is put through strength, conditioning and vision testing as well as physio profiling. Sessions in teamwork are being run by the Royal Marines and talks have included Ben Hunt-Davis (Rowing Gold Medalist)and the “DNA of a Champion” by Sir Clive Woodward. The camp is being run by Mike Hay, BOA Head of Winter Sport Engagement and a full team of Tass Support Staff. They are also being monitored daily by Sports Scientists and given advice to aid performance.
The athletes have been split into 3 teams and daily awards of points (and deduction penalties)keep the competitive spirit well and truley alive!
On Wednesday evening the athletes and coaches took part in mock interviews and press conferences being conducted by the BOA Media team and filmed by Blue Peter for the BBC who have been covering all todays sessions as part of their Innsbruck 2012 coverage. Robert Fawns did a great job playing the part of a Silver medal winning athlete who broke the “no alcohol” rule of the games and was being removed from the village and the GB Squad after having to face the “worlds press” over the incident!
Thursday will see the 3 teams run selections to find out which athlete will compete in which event for the Innsbruck Mini Olympics taking place on Friday morning.
Separate sessions are being run for the coaches in areas such as Talent Identification, Performance Analysis and Coaching Development with the chance to learn and share knowledge between sports.
Information on the selection criteria for the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games will be published in the near future and will comprise of an open application and selection process. The four athletes who have been given the opportunity to attend the camp were nominated to the BOA using our database based on the criteria of date of birth for the event.
