Glynhill Ladies International

The Glynhill Ladies International begins this Friday, 18th January, at Braehead Curling Rink. With the strongest entry ever in this its sixth year, the Glynhill promises three days of truly world class curling.

Featuring in this year’s draw, Eve Muirhead, silver medalist at the 2012 European Championships at Karlstad Sweden, may have the opportunity of gaining revenge after their extra end one shot Final defeat by Anna Sidorova’s Russian rink. The two have been kept apart in the section draw, and provided both match the level of performance produced at the Europeans, another head to head in the final in not an impossibility.

Standing in their way however will be some very serious opposition. Heading up section A is current World Champion Mirjam Ott and her Swiss rink. As well as facing the Sidorova rink for a place in the quarter finals on Sunday, they will have tough matches against Jonna McManus from Sweden, Linda Klimova’s Czechs, Daniela Driendil from Germany and the home Scottish rink of Kerry Barr.

Section B favourites on paper look to be Heather Nedohin and her Canadian rink, Bronze medalists at the last Worlds. Their most serious challengers however could be the Swiss rink of Silvana Tirinzoni, and the experienced Scots rink skipped by Jackie Lockhart.

Section C is headed up by reigning double Olympic champion Anette Norberg from Sweden, who has brought her local Karlstad rink over to compete for the first time.

Her greatest challengers could be either the regular World finalists rink of Lene Nielsen from Denmark, or the new Scottish rink put together by Lorna Vevers, although the Czech girls of Anna Kubeskova can never be written off.

It is in section D that the greatest intrigue and local interest will be focused on Team Muirhead. They will face a tough challenge from 2009 World Champions Bingyu Wang and her Chinese rink, and it could be the outcome of that game on the Friday night that will determine which team heads the group.
