On Tuesday 27th September 2011, Inverness Ice Centre saw 24 coaches, personal assistants and curlers including a pupil from Millburn Academy take part in Highland Wheelchair Curling Club’s Try Wheelchair Curling event.

Judy Mackenzie, chair of Scottish Wheelchair Curling Association and Sheila Swan, Development Officer for Royal Caledonian Curling Club attended the event.

Before going on ice, Judy and Sheila gave brief presentations about SWCA and its future programmes including the Shot Maker competition and the new Wheelchair Skills Awards.

After a short warm up led by Sheila, it was onto the ice. Some of the people attending had curled before and with some expert coaching, the newcomers were showing great potential shooting stones up and down the ice like the rest of them.

Mo Simpson North Representative for SWCA and local club secretary said “There are lots of people who have a natural talent for the sport in Highland and it would be great if they would come on days like this and “give it a go”.

Highland Wheelchair Curling Club would like to thank Inverness Ice Centre, SWCA, especially Judy and Sheila, the coaches, personal assistants and of course the curlers themselves for making the event a success.

If you want a fun afternoon out and make new friends, then why not come along to the club. We meet every Tuesday between 1.30pm and 3.30pm at Inverness Ice Centre.
