Kinross Wheelchair Curling International 2011 – final round up
Ten teams entered the Kinross Wheelchair International this year Canada 1 and 2 coming in from their success in Norway , Switzerland, Norway, Scotland 1,2,3 and some new faces this year with Russia 1,2 and Latvia making the trip. They soon settled down to produce some excellent curling and close games throughout the two sections with Scotland 2 putting in a fine performance only dropping one point to claim top spot in section A and Switzerland winning their last two games to take the second place. In section B it was a much tighter affair. Russia 2 winning the section they too only dropping 1 point, but with Canada 2, Scotland 1 and Norway all tied on 4 points, Norway claimed second spot on ends scored.
The 1/ 2 playoff would be Scotland 2 V Russia 2
The ¾ playoff would be Switzerland V Norway
In the 3/4 playoff Switzerland and Norway swapped ends and were tied 4 all in the sixth but Switzerland stole a 5 in the 7th to give them a 9 to 4 lead and Norway shook hands. Switzerland taking 3 place.
In the 1/2 playoff Russia 2 took an early lead taking singles in the first two ends . Scotland 2 picking up a 2 in the third but immediately lost a 4 in the fourth and it was still all to play for Scotland 2 picking up singles in ends 5 and 6 . Russia replied by taking a 3 in the 7th end to make it 9 -4 going into the last end. Scotland 2 made a spirited attempt to create some cover but Russia kept it clean to run Scotland 2 out of stones. Russia 2 claiming the number 1 spot.
Two tremendous games for the spectators and a credit to the sport of wheelchair curling.
The Kinross Wheelchair Curling International organising committee would like to thank all the teams that competed at the event for coming and making it a very successful competition.
Thanks must also go to the Green Hotel and the bar staff in the ice rink for looking after our visitors all week. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out on and off the ice all week and to the time keepers and to Dor Borthwick for umpiring the event . Thanks to Councillor Kellas of Perth and Kinross for providing a reception for the competitors and presenting the prizes at the closing dinner.
It would not be possible to hold such an event without the ice conditions to allow these athletes to produce the form that they strive to achieve and a big thank you must go to Steven Kerr and his ice staff who continually produce ice of an extremely high standard which makes the competition such a popular and successful venue on the world circuit.
