Nelson and Robertson Win National Masters Titles
The National Masters Curling Championships were held at Greenacres Curling Rink from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th March. 24 teams took part in the competition which was split into four sections with the top two teams progressing to the Semi-Finals.
After the round-robin stages it was Teams Nelson, Rutherford, Hamilton and Henderson, that progressed in the men’s competition, while in the women’s competition, Teams Margaret Robertson (Lanarkshire), Barr, Jamieson and Margaret A Robertson (Border) qualified for the Semi-Finals.
In the men’s Semi-Finals Team Hamilton negotiated their way past Team Henderson with a score of 5-4 win, scoring the single needed in the 8th end, to secure their place in the Final, while Team Nelson put on a dominant display in their Semi-Final to defeat Team Rutherford 6-1 .
The Women’s Semi-Finals was to see a battle of the namesakes as the teams of Margaret A Robertson (Borders) took on Margaret Robertson (Lanarkshire). In the end it was the Borders team who won this game with a convincing final score of 11-3. Team Barr took control of their Semi-Final against Team Jamieson early on, taking a four in the first end, to build a commanding lead and although Team Jamieson tried to get back into this game, it was Barr who emerged victorious with a score of 7-3.
The men’s Final was a close run affair between Team Nelson and Team Hamilton, the decisive end coming in the 6th when Team Nelson scored a three to take control of the game. Adding a further steal of one in the 7th end Team Nelson (Sandy Nelson, Willie Patterson, Alan Barr and Donnie Smith pictured bottom left) went on to claim a 7-4 victory and the National Masters men’s title.
In the women’s Final Team Margaret A Robertson (Margaret A Robertson, Venetia Scott. Gillian Smith and Liz Cullen pictured top right) maintained their good form to defeat Team Barr with a convincing 6-1 scoreline to win the National Masters women’s title.
