Scene is Set for 2013 Scottish Curling Championships

The best of Scotland’s women’s and men’s curling teams are gathering at Dewars Rinks in Perth for the finals of The Co-operative Funeralcare Scottish Curling Championships, which get underway on Monday (Feb 11th).

Tom Brewster (pictured right) has led his Curl Aberdeen team to victory – and world silver medals – in the last two years, and he opens his title defence against Kinross’s Ross McCleary on Monday morning, before coming back onto the ice against Grant Hardie from Dumfries in his second round-robin game on Monday evening.

Hardie lost the final of last month’s junior championship to Perth’s Kyle Smith, who opens his campaign against another Perth team led by Glen Muirhead.

The third Perth team in the line-up – led by veteran internationalist Warwick Smith – starts against Hardie.

It took all the way to a second tie-break for Stranraer’s Hammy McMillan to qualify for these finals, and he faces Stirling’s Logan Gray in their opener.

The remaining opening match-up among the ten men’s teams taking part sees Curl Aberdeen’s David Edwards face Neil Joss from Greenacres.

There are eight teams in the women’s event, and defending champion Eve Muirhead (right) of Perth opens against Lauren Baxter from Greenacres at tea-time on Monday.

Newly re-crowned Scottish junior champion – and reigning world junior champion – Hannah Fleming from Lockerbie faces Murrayfield’s Kerry Barr in the opening session of play, while Aberdeen’s former world champion Jackie Lockhart is up against Gina Aitken from Murrayfield.

Stranraer’s Gail Munro was last season’s losing finalist and she returns this season, with an opening game against Jennifer Martin from Greenacres.

In both the men’s and women’s events, round-robin play carries on throughout the week until Friday, with, depending on the need for tie-breakers, Page play-off games and semi-finals scheduled for Saturday.

The women’s final will start at 11.00 on Sunday morning (Feb 17th), to be followed by the men’s final at 3.00pm.

There will be live scoring and daily reports on this site throughout the Championships.
