Stirling hosts successful Summer Skins Event

There were home turf celebrations at The Peak last weekend (5 – 7 August) after some of Scotland’s leading curlers brushed off stiff competition to win the third annual Summer Skins Curling Competition at the Stirling Sports Village.

Olympians, World and European champions and junior champions were amongst the 34 teams taking part in the unique tournament, from countries right across Europe, including Sweden, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Norway, Denmark and Scotland.

The winning team were Graham Shedden, Claire Sloan, Kenny Oswald and Megan Runciman who defeated a mixed team made up of two Dutch and two Scots.

Additional homegrown talent taking part included Ross Paterson, Kay Adams and Sarah Macintyre, who are all in the World Class Performance Curling –  Podium Squad. The packed competition included the reigning Olympic silver medallist and European Champion, Christoffer Svae of Norway, reigning European silver medallist Rasmus Stjerne from Denmark – who won the Stirling Skins in 2010 – and reigning World Women’s champion, Sara Carlsson of Sweden.

The event was heralded the biggest and best so far, with more teams than ever before entering to win the title of Stirling Skins Champions. Four wheelchair teams also took part – twice the number of last year – as well as teams with a wide range of experience and skill.

Logan Gray from The Peak, was delighted with the success of the event. He said: “There was a great atmosphere on and around the ice-rink over the weekend and although it was a competition, the camaraderie was strong and everyone enjoyed themselves.

“Attracting the calibre of curlers we had competing is testament to both the facilities we have here at The Peak, the professional organisation of the event and to the appeal of Stirling and the surrounding areas. With this success behind us, I am confident that the event will continue to grow in numbers and appeal.”
