Success in the U.S. for Scots at Pre-Season Summerspiel
Scotland’s National Wheelchair Curling Squad enjoyed a successful pre-season curling trip to the 2012 Wheelchair Summerspiel at Cape Cod Curling Club, Falmouth MA, USA, by winning the event with a strong performance against Quebec in the final.
This year’s competition which took place from 22nd – 25th July, featured nine teams with Scotland’s squad of Aileen Neilson, Gregor Ewan, Jim Gault, Gill Keith and Ian Donaldson playing nine games over four days.
After five draws the team had secured three wins and two losses going into the final day of round robin play. Three straight wins were required to secure a spot in the Championship Final and the team accomplished this feat with victories over USA 3, former Ontario provincial champion Chris Rees and the USA National team from this past World Championship. These three victories gave Scotland the opportunity to play the Quebec provincial champions in the final, a team which had previously defeated them in an earlier round. Neilson and her team knew they had to play to their potential and they did just that by playing their strongest game of the competition, with an overall team shooting percentage of 70%, to win 9-4 in the final game.
Cape Cod’s third annual Wheelchair Summerspiel featured strong competition and was a productive training exercise for Scotland’s national squad members in preparation for the coming season. Head Coach Tony Zummack remarked on a successful event, “The competition has been very high and the amount of time and effort put into the bonspiel by both organizers and competitors alike is evident.”
