Summer Camp 2015 Review & Gallery

The annual RCCC Junior Summer Camp finished today at the Peak, Stirling after a jam packed week of activities for 46 juniors aged 13 to 17.

Amongst this year’s coaching team were; Barbara McFarlane (RCCC Performance Development Coach), Claire Milne (RCCC Development Officer), Brad Askew (Men’s Coach Shanghai University, China), Hammy McMillan Jnr (Performance Curler), Allen Coliban (WCF Development Officer), Marion Murdoch (RCCC Development Officer), Michael Goodfellow (2014 Olympian & RCCC Level 1 Coach) and Alison Cunningham (RCCC Coach Educator & RCCC Level 1 Coach)

Managed by Judith McCleary (RCCC Head of Development), the coaching team delivered daily classroom and ice sessions which covered a range of topics from delivery and sweeping to team roles, strategy & tactics. Bruce Mouat & Rachel Hannen (current Scottish Curling Junior Champions) came along to talk to the juniors about their experience at the World Junior Championships in Estonia, and sportscotland physios Maggie Bush and Dave Leith delivered an active session on warm-up and cool-down exercises.

Apart from the curling, the campers competed in a range of other activities including mountain biking, climbing and ten pin bowling, to name but a few and even had their very own roller skating disco. There was great camaraderie between the groups throughout the week, with lots of new friendships being formed and new teams being compiled for competitions next season.

One of the highlight’s of the camp was the Curling Challenge on Tuesday evening, at which 12 performance curlers and RCCC President Billy Howat joined the campers. Each team played 5 x 1 end games with all players rotating positions. We are very grateful to all of the performance curlers who gave up their time to curl with the juniors and inspire our next generation of champions.

The ‘shot of the challenge’ was awarded to Caitlin Jones who played a hit and roll to lie 5. Vicki Adams (2014 Olympic Bronze Medallist) presented Caitlin with one of her team’s tops from the Continental Cup earlier this year.
