Team Aitken and Whyte Win Greenacres Asham Under 21
The first Asham Under 21 Slam competition of the season took place at Greenacres Curling Rink this weekend. 9 junior men’s teams and 6 junior women’s teams took part in the competition.
After the round-robin stages it was Teams Barr, Carson, Whyte and Brydone which progressed to the Men’s Semi-Finals. Team Carson overcame Team Barr in a commanding 9-3 win in seven ends. A big score of a five in the fifth end proving to be the decisive blow. The other Semi-Final was much of a closer affair and in fact had to be decided in an extra end, which saw team Whyte overcoming Team Brydone.
In the Final, Team Whyte built up an early in this game, moving into a 4-1 lead by the half way point. After Carson scoring a single in the fifth, Team Whyte moved further into the lead adding another two in the sixth to move into a 6-2 lead. Team Carson did try their best to get back into this game and did manage to reduce the deficit to 6-4 in the seventh end but team Whyte successfully blanked the eighth end to take the Asham Under 21 – The Greenacres Junior Masters men’s title.
The junior women’s Semi-Finals were both close run affairs and in fact both went to extra ends. In the first of the Semi-Finals, Team Murray moved into an early 6-2 lead by the fourth end break, but this was to a game of two halfs with Team Morgan hitting straight back after the mid way point and pulling it back to 9-9 by the 8th end. In fact Team Morgan went on to take this game grabbing the win in the extra end which saw them moving into the Final. In the other Semi-Final Team Aitken grabbed a hold of this game with a string of steals and although Young managed to close the score to 6-7, it was Team Aitken who secured the Finals place.
The women’s final, if anything, was even tighter. Team Aitken were one down with the hammer going into the last end, Aitken’s final draw for what may be a two to win the final came up short. After two very close measures the point went to Aitken putting the score at 6-6 going into an extra end, leaving Morgan with the hammer. As Aitken came to play her final stone in the extra, with two of their shots sitting behind tee off the 1ft, Aitken covered the button with her final stone leaving Morgan a very difficult shot to remove the stone from the button. Morgan’s final shot wasn’t able to remove Aitken stone however finished sitting second shot, meaning the extra end and the Asham Under 21 – Greenacres Junior Masters women’s title went to Aitken winning the final 7-6.
