Team Edwards lifts Scottish Mixed Title

David Edwards and his team of Kerry Barr, Scott Macleod and Louise Wood won the Scottish Mixed Curling Championships which were held at Curl Aberdeen from Friday 25th – Sunday 27th March 2011. Twenty-two teams compete in four sections (two sections of five and two sections of six) with the top two ranked teams in each section qualifying for the quarterfinals on Sunday morning.

Section’s A and B were easily decided following the completion of the round robin games with Blair Fraser, Alan Smith, Colin Hamilton and Ewan MacDonald progressing. In Sections C and D, Neil Joss and David Edwards grabbed the top ranked positions in their respective sections while tie-breakers were needed to find the second qualifiers. Paul Stevenson crept past Glen Muirhead in an extra end while Jay McWilliam ran Jim Cullen out of stones in the other tie-breaker.

In the quarterfinals, Alan Smith defeated Colin Hamilton 7-3, David Edwards kept his nose in front of Paul Stevenson with a 6-5 win, Neil Joss convincingly beat Jay McWilliam 11-3 and Blair Fraser stole consecutive ends from Olympian Ewan MacDonald to progress with an 8-2 victory.

The semi-finals were both tightly contested with only single shots being scored throughout the Smith versus Edwards game. Single steals for the Edwards side in ends seven and eight secured their place in the final with a 4-2 win.  In the other semi-final, Blair Fraser and Neil Joss were tied at 5-5 coming down the last end with the Blair side holding last stone advantage. Good play from the Joss team left Fraser with a tough shot which drew too far handing Joss a steal of two and the game.

The final was another tight encounter with both teams forcing their opposition to take singles in the opening ends. Joss scored the first deuce of the game in the fourth end but the Edwards side instantly responded with their own in the fifth. A single for Joss in the sixth put their noses in front once again and then a single for Edwards in the seventh was a disappointing outcome of a potential split for three shots which overcurled, to go into the final end with the scores tied. Both sides played the final end well, with Edwards coming into the house to lie two with his final stone. Joss elected to go for the hit and lie but rolled inches too far to give up a single steal and the Scottish Mixed title. David Edwards, Kerry Barr, Scott Macleod and Louise Woods will represent Scotland at the European Mixed Championships in September.
