Team GB Secure Further Slots for Sochi 2014
Team GB have secured a second wave of athlete quota places for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
Like their female counterparts, the Scottish men’s curling team secured a further five athlete slots for Team GB, courtesy of a bronze medal win at the World Championships this weekend by skip David Murdoch, Thomas Brewster, Scott Andrews, Michael Goodfellow and Greg Drummond. The Scottish men’s curling team have now medalled in six consecutive World Championships.
Mike Hay, BOA Head of Sport Engagement said:
“Congratulations to the Scottish men’s team and coach Soren Gran, who not only secured another World Championship medal but also maintained Scotland’s run of medalling at every men’s World Championships since 2008. They faced many of the teams that they are likely to meet at the Sochi 2014 Games at the Worlds this past week in Victoria, Canada and showed their class by topping the 12 team round robin phase. I am sure that missing out on a place in the final will only fuel them to go one better in Sochi next year.
“Team GB has now secured 10 out of the approximately 50 athlete quota places expected for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Our sports have secured five World Championship medals across four Olympic Winter disciplines this season and I am sure that will give all of our Sochi 2014 hopefuls a boost going into next year’s Olympic season.”
The five World Championship medals secured this season are: Shelley Rudman – gold in skeleton; women’s curling team – gold; James Woods – silver in freestyle skiing; Elise Christie – bronze in short track; and men’s curling team – bronze.
Scotland has been nominated by British Curling to secure ranking points on behalf of Team GB for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi for both men’s and women’s curling teams.
The athletes who will take up the five men’s curling slots can originate from any Home Nation and will be nominated to the BOA by British Curling in due course.
The Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games take place from 7-23 February 2014.
Team GB is expected to be made up of approximately 50 athletes.
