Team Murray and Whyte win the Asham Under 17 Slam

The final event in the 2013-14 Asham u17 Slam was held at Dewars Centre, Perth on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March. It was still everything to play for at the final stage which would determine the two teams who would grab the Grand Prize and be travelling to Fussen for the World Curling Federation Summer Camp.

The first game of the Round Robin is not usually the point in the competition where one of the Overall Winners is decided, but with Katie Murray keeping half an eye on the results of Hailey Duffs games, it was a Hit and Roll attempt by Kerr Sands against two counters that ran wide and instead of jamming which handed them the game. After this Flint managed to find a double take out and claim a 3 with his final stone and a win at 5-4. This meant that the maximum points Team Duff could accumulate in this competition, was 19 instead of the maximum 21 required handing the title and the trip to Fussen to Team Murray (Pictured top right).

Team Whyte (958x1024)Team Ross Whyte had been on good form all season and would be tough to dislodge from the top of the podium, but Teams Luke Carson and Fraser Kingan were within striking distance. Stepping up to the challenge Whyte took out Carson in the High Road Quarter Final, while a round robin defeat had dropped Team Kingan to the Low Road which meant they were not able to achieve the overall points required.

The Low Road Final was between Team James Hay (pictured below left) and Team Cameron McNay with James Hay, Vice Euan MacDiarmid, Second Gregor Bousie and Lead Ross Cormack emerging victorious after a back and forth battle that came down to the final stone.

Team Hay (1024x438)The High Road Final was between Teams Ross Whyte and Robin McCall (Pictured below right). McCall got the first point on the board but Team Whyte took control with a 2 in the 3rd end and steals of 1 in the 4th and 5th to allow them to hit for home. Handshakes in the 8th handed the title to Ross Whyte, Vice Bobby Lammie, Second Neil Topping and Lead Euan Kyle.
