Team Whyte and Team Morrison are the Scottish Junior Champions
After this morning’s semi-finals it was all to play for at the 2018 Johnston Carmichael Scottish Curling Junior Championships and there would be a new skip lifting both the women’s and men’s trophies. Team Whyte started strongly and an excellent double takeout secured a score of three points. A force of one followed and they were able to keep Team Kinnear at arms-length and led by a score of 4-1 at halftime.
As the game resumed, Team Kinnear scored one in the sixth end but the steal of two points that followed swung the momentum in their favour. This was stalled as Team Whyte responded with two points and took control of the game. After forcing Team Kinnear to a single in the ninth end, skip Ross Whyte made a nose hit in the tenth. With that, the title was sealed and Team Whyte became the 2018 Johnston Carmichael Scottish Curling Junior Champions.
The women’s final started the same way as the semi-final before it with both teams happy to blank the opening ends and settle into the occasion. Team Bryce struck first with a score of two in the third end but an excellent demonstration of draw weight by Rebecca Morrison sealed a two for Team Morrison. Team Bryce took a slender 3-2 lead into the second half.
A blank end settled the teams in before Team Morrison took the lead for the first time with a score of two in the seventh end. Team Morrison forced a blank in end 8 but Team Bryce refocused, blanking end 9 and left themselves needing to score two points with the hammer to take the game and the title. A final tap back attempt was slightly too heavy and left Morrison with a steal of one and the championship!
