The Peak retains Friendship Trophy
The Friendship Trophy was played at the Peak on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th April 2013. Five ice rinks, Braehead, Kinross, Lanarkshire, Lockerbie and The Peak took part in this inter-rink competition of Triples and Pairs. The great camaraderie displayed over the two days was noted by spectators, which is what this competition is all about.
The format of the competition was adapted for the number of entries to a round robin. Right up to the last session it was all to play for. The Peak, represented by Neil Hogg, Brian Smith, Angie Malone, Debbie McKenna and Lizzie Jackson, had completed all their games and had to wait patiently to see if they had done enough to secure a place in the final. They had – along with Lanarkshire represented by Paul Webster, David Wightman, Eddie Fleming and Arthur Bell, who secured enough points in their last round to gain the other final slot.
The final matches, both Pairs games, saw The Peak’s Brian Smith and Debbie McKenna, playing superbly in her very first season, pitched against the experienced David Wightman and Paul Webster. It was a very exciting game with the advantage swaying between the teams. The Peak pulled ahead by scoring a four at the 4th end, and stealing a single at the 5th end to go 8 – 5 ahead going into the last end. Lanarkshire played a very good last end and managed to score three shots to record a peel. In the other match Angie Malone and Neil Hogg proved too strong a combination for Lanarkshire’s Arthur Bell and Eddie Fleming. The Peak therefore won outright to retain the Friendship Trophy to the delight of the players and supporters.
SWCA Vice Chair Rosemary Lenton thanked Graeme Baxter for the excellent ice which the players had enjoyed, umpires Gifford Rickard and Gill Smith, the restaurant staff for their attention during the excellent Friendship Dinner, and of course all the ice helpers.
It was a delight for Rosemary to welcome Ann McGarva who suggested the idea of an inter-rink competition and who donated the Friendship Trophy in 2007. It was a pleasure for Ann to attend the final and to present her trophy to the Peak.
