Weekend Review: Brewster reaches final of Baden Masters
At the Baden Masters over the weekend the Scottish teams fared well in their first competition of the 2011-12 season. Team Murdoch topped their section with an undefeated record to progress to the quarterfinals and Team Brewster dropped only one game to Team Pescia of Switzerland in their group stage.
In the quarterfinals, Murdoch faced Team Uusipaavalniemi of Finland in a tight game which needed an extra end steal from Murdoch’s newly formed team to progress to the semifinals.
Brewster and team fought hard in their quarterfinal game against Team Oehninger of Switzerland going into the final end one down with last stone advantage. A score of 4 shots to secure the win put them into the semifinals in what was to be the first meeting of the season for Brewster and Murdoch.
In the semifinal, Brewster scored deuces while forcing Murdoch to his single shots to build a lead that Murdoch and his team of Glen Muirhead, Ross Paterson and Richard Woods were unable to challenge. Brewster ran Team Murdoch out of stones in the eighth end to win with a 6-3 scoreline and progress to the tournament final against Sven Michel’s Swiss side.
In the final, the Swiss side took an early 3-0 lead when a pick up cost Team Brewster a deuce in the second end followed by a single steal in the third. Brewster and his team of Greg Drummond, Scott Andrews and Colin Campbell (substituting for Michael Goodfellow) fought hard scoring a deuce in the fourth end but were unable to make up the deficit with Michel and his team running out 7-3 winners.
A good performance by both Scottish teams in their first competition of the season.
