Scottish Wheelchair Championships

Eight teams played a round robin of four games each in the Scottish Wheelchair Curling Championship held at Curl Aberdeen. Interesting games were played out in front of a dedicated group of spectators which included the Lord Provost of Aberdeen who visited on Saturday to watch the morning games.  Some colour was injected to the ice thanks to the most pleasing purple outfits sported by Angie Malone and her team.

The round robin resulted in the teams skipped by Aileen Neilson, Gregor Ewan, Tom Killin and Angie Malone, all members of the Scottish National Squad, progressing to the semi finals.

In these games, Ewan against Malone, Neilson against Killin, Gregor Ewan and Aileen Neilson had comfortable wins setting up a clash of these very experienced skips for the final, a repeat of last year, and Gregor’s third successive attempt to win the title.

In the final both teams demonstrated excellent play. Aileen, with Michael McCreadie, Mo Simpson and Seamus McArdle, playing in his second season and his first Championship final, stole a single at the first end. Gregor, with Jim Gault, Mike McKenzie and Jackie Cayton, answered that by taking two at the second end and with Aileen’s draw coming up short at the 3rd end Team Ewan stole two to go 4-1 ahead.  Gregor kept up the pressure at the 4th end to take a comfortable lead. Aileen then made life difficult for Gregor scoring singles in the next 3 ends.  However she needed to score 4 to force an extra end and with both teams playing excellent draws, Team Ewan had a stone close to the button where it stayed despite best efforts by Aileen’s team.  Gregor and his team were delighted to win the title at last.

The Rhona Martin Trophy was presented by SWCA Vice Chair Rosemary Lenton and thanks were expressed to umpires, helpers, and Curl Aberdeen.

The recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, as voted by the players, was Mary Bell of Lockerbie WCC.  Her surprise and delight rendered her almost speechless!
