2023-24 SCOTTISH CURLING ACADEMY SELECTION
We are delighted to announce the athletes selected for the Scottish Curling National and Regional Academy programmes in 2023-24.
On the men’s side, last season’s National Academy squads – Team Strawhorn and Team Carson – are going into another winter together. Team Strawhorn (Jack Strawhorn, Hamish Gallacher, Kaleb Johnston, Rory Macnair) dominated the Asham Under 21 Slam series in 2022-23, winning three of the four legs without dropping a game. Team Carson (Orrin Carson, Logan Carson, Archie Hyslop, Charlie Gibb) excelled last season, clinching the Scottish junior title, almost securing a play-off spot at the Scottish national championships, and going on to win world junior bronze. Both rinks are looking to continue their momentum into the upcoming winter.
Meanwhile, there is a reshuffle to the teams on the National Academy women’s side. With Amy Mitchell moving on to the British Curling programme, her former teammates Hannah Farries, Kirsty Gallacher, and Robyn Mitchell form part of a new rink alongside Tia Laurie (skip) and Holly Burke who both make the step up from the Regional Academy. A wholly new team will be skipped by Jodi Leigh Bass with Katie Archibald, Cara Davidson, and Alex McMillan completing the side, all four of them progressing from the Regional Academy.
Twenty-seven individual athletes form the Regional Academy, meaning a total of 44 curlers will be involved in the programmes in 2023-24.
‘This is an exciting time for the programme with the talented pool of athletes we have,’ said newly-appointed Academy manager Scott Andrews. ‘I am looking forward to working with the athletes and their coaches to develop their skills both on and off the ice throughout the season.’
