Club Workshops & Seminars

Scottish Curling will continue to deliver a programme of workshops throughout the season to support clubs in developing their activities which will strengthen their operations and contribute to the growth of curling. This will include Club Accreditation workshops, alongside other topics designed to provide clubs with practical support, guidance and opportunities to share ideas and good practice.

New workshops and dates will be added as they become available and are free for Scottish Curling members.

Club Accreditation – An Introduction Workshop

This workshop introduces clubs to Scottish Curling’s club accreditation programme and explains how it can help support clubs to recognise the good work they already do, help identify areas for improvement and helps to create a clear pathway for future development. The workshop will explore the accreditation structure, development units , evidence requirement and introduce clubs to Brightspace, while highlighting the practical support available throughout the club accreditation journey. 

Workshop Objectives:

  • To introduce clubs to the development programme is and why it is beneficial
  • To demonstrate how accreditation can support club development
  • To help clubs understand the accreditation levels and governance pathways
  • To encourage clubs to identify their own strengths, gaps and development priorities
  • To show clubs how to use Brightspace to work through the programme and track progress

Supporting Try Curling: How Clubs Can Engage with the Grassroots Pathway

  • Learn what is required for a club to deliver their own Try Curling session
  • Think about what follow up is required after a Try Curling session

On Ice Workshops

To help members develop their curling skills, Scottish Curling supports a number of seminars & workshops, organised in conjunction with ice rink facilities, local curling development groups, and clubs. A wide range of exciting seminars & workshops can be arranged, all led by highly experienced and knowledgeable presenters, coaches & athletes.

Sweeping
Keep up-to-date with the latest sweeping strategies and advice provided through this 2 hour workshop (1 hour off ice and 1 hour on ice). You will get the chance to test your own sweeping strength using the latest technologies and will get advice from experts in this field.

Slide Delivery
This workshop is designed to refine your delivery technique, helping you optimise your consistency and get more enjoyment from the game. Starting with 1 hour off-ice followed by 2 hours on-ice in small groups, you can get help to identify any areas you may want to change and support & advice to make those changes too. This workshop is suitable for all curlers irrelevant of experience.

Stick Delivery
This workshop is designed to refine your stick delivery technique, helping you optimise your consistency and get more enjoyment from the game. This 2 hour workshop can help to identify any areas you may want to improve and will help curlers who are transitioning between slide and stick delivery.

Coaching Day
A coaching day (approx. 6 hours) can provide multiple workshops; this can be a mixture of workshops listed above and / or specific topics such as skip signals & communication, etiquette etc. Previous coaching days including Ladies Days and Province Coaching Days have been tailored to meet the members’ requirements. This is very flexible and should be noted on your interest form and discussed with Scottish Curling’s Development Manager to agree the most suitable content.

If you are interested in hosting an event together with Scottish Curling please read the responsibilities outlined below before emailing development@scottishcurling.org. Please be aware that the more notice you can provide the more likely Scottish Curling will be to fulfil your request, securing suitable presenters, coaches & athletes.

Responsibilities of Scottish Curling
• Provide promotional posters (PDF format) and registration form for host group to use
• Arrange suitable presenters, coaches and athletes to deliver seminar
• Arrange course content and provide all coaching equipment required
• Provide name badges for handout at registration (Scottish Curling will determine groups for coaching)
• Provide handouts for distribution
• Make expense cover payments to presenters, coaches & athletes (cost covered by host – see below)

Responsibilities of the host facility / development group / area /province / ladies centre
• Book any ice required (max 8 participants per sheet) & cover ice costs
• Book any room facilities required, ensure suitable layout on the day & cover any room hire costs
• Book any catering & refreshments for all participants and presenters & cover costs
• Administration for the day including promotion, registration of participants & payments from participants
• Provide registration list to Scottish Curling a minimum of 1 week prior to seminar / workshop
• Initial cost of £100 for the workshop with an additional £60 per extra presenter/coach (invoice from Scottish Curling)

* Please note that seminars off-ice usually involve 2 presenters, seminars mostly on-ice such as delivery involve coaches at 1:8 maximum ratio and those seminars involving a split of on-ice and off-ice activity such as mixed doubles, will require discussion on the number of coaches required.
