Deaf Awareness Training
About
This workshop has been created in conjunction with the National Deaf Children’s Society for coaches and other volunteers, as well as curlers themselves to introduce them to Deaf-friendly activities. There are estimated to be around 1 million people living with deafness or some form of hearing loss in Scotland today and around 12,000 who use British Sign Language to communicate, so awareness of the issues faced by people with deafness or hearing loss will be invaluable for coaches, volunteers and curlers.
Some key themes covered:
- Understanding Deafness
- Communication including fingerspelling
- Technology
- Adapting activities
- An introduction to British Sign Language and specific BSL signs for Curling
- Sources of further information and resources
This course is suitable for coaches, assistants, and curlers who wish to be better prepared to include deaf people in their activities.
