Scottish Coaching Certificate – Level 2

About

Welcome to The Scottish Coaching Certificate (SCC) – Level 2. This qualification is aimed at coaches who have completed their (UKCC) Level 1 or SCC – Level 1 course and have been practicing as a coach for at least 12 months. Learners may also have an equivalent Level 1 qualification from another sport.

Aims and Outcomes

The principle aim of this qualification is to enable learners to successfully develop their knowledge and skills in sports coaching by planning, delivering and reviewing coaching sessions and programmes intentionally and independently.

Upon successful completion of the course you will:

  1. Have an understanding of professional practice in sports coaching and how to apply it.
  2. Be confident and competent in your coaching practice which is built on Knowing Yourself, Knowing Others and Knowing Coaching.
  3. Have the knowledge to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal skills to support the development of participants within a sporting context.
  4. Be more self-aware and better equipped to develop participants through application of frameworks and support other coaches and volunteers.
  5. Have the knowledge of the role of a coach and the boundaries to keep themselves and others safe and healthy.
  6. Have the skills and knowledge to develop, deliver and evaluate coaching practice.
  7. Be able to create an effective programme that demonstrates an understanding of the participant and the demands of the sport.
  8. Be able to apply sporting trends and recent developments in curling to your coaching environment.
  9. Be able to apply reflective skills to review learning practice.
  10. Have the skills required for leading in a sports coaching role.
  11. Have the required technical knowledge for a Level 2 coach. Technical Knowledge .

The groups you may be coaching could include Try Curling, CurlingsCool, juniors, adult beginners, Gateway clubs, wheelchair curling, inclusive curling, junior or senior teams.   You may also be interested in coaching at regional or national academy level. 

Course Design

The course employs a blended learning approach, combining self-directed study and tutor-led sessions. These sessions will be conducted both online and in-person during practical sessions. 

Assessment will be ongoing, conducted by the tutor through various means such as coaching observations, discussions, and assigned tasks. Additionally, you’ll be tasked with completing four linked sessions in your rink under live conditions. 

Your tutor will use assessment rubrics to gauge your progress and pinpoint areas of strength as well as areas for improvement. These rubrics are aligned with the course standards, and achieving Level 2 (meets expectations) across all standards is required to attain the qualification 

Requirements/ pre-requisite

To enrol in the course, you must meet specific criteria: you must be at least 17 years old and there is a preference to have a minimum of 12 months as a qualified curling coach. Additionally, the qualification must be achieved within a 12-month timeframe.

In addition to completing the coaching course, you’ll need to provide evidence of the following certifications if you are in a regulated role:

  • A valid PVG certificate (Protection of Vulnerable Groups)
  • A valid Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (CWPS) certificate

Remember, you must be at least 17 years old, and the qualification must be completed within 12 months from course commencement.

Revalidation

The primary focus of revalidation in curling is on enhancing learners’ coaching skills and expanding their knowledge base. This growth can be tailored to the specific sport or involve broadening skills in a more generic context. Here’s an overview of the coach revalidation process:

Within a three-year timeframe, coaches should engage in one of the following options:

  • Attend 1 x Coaching and Development Conference and
  • 1 x Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshop,
  • OR attend 2 x CPD workshops, with at least one workshop being sport-specific.

Additionally, coaches must have valid PVG and CWPS certificates if they are in a regulated role.
