BUSINESS EXPERIENCE
Please detail your relevant business and corporate governance experience and skills that would make you a good vice president for the organisation
I qualified as an Advanced Craft joiner after leaving school, working my way up to site supervisor before starting my own business in the house building trade, whilst lecturing carpentry & joinery at college on a part-time basis. Following a short period of ill-health, I started lecturing full-time. 19 years later, the business was re-instated & operated for 15 years before my retirement c4 years ago. During the summer months I now caddy at Prestwick Golf Club.
There have been many special personal curling achievements, with the most notable being:
2000 Gold Medal – Rotary World Curling Championships, Niagara Falls, Canada
2014 Gold Medal – Scottish Senior Championships
2015 Silver Medal – Scottish Senior Championships
2020 Gold Medal – Scottish Senior Championships
2022 Gold Medal – Scottish Senior Championships
2023 Strathcona Cup tourist & team skip
The afore-mentioned employed & self-employed experiences together with the under-noted volunteer positions outline what I believe to be varied & rounded life attributes which I think can be used & applied in any future positions & appointments.
Having enjoyed curling at club (& latterly at Scottish level) since the age of 14, it would be a great honour to represent Scottish Curling as Vice President providing the opportunity to give a little back to the sport which I have benefitted from in terms of competing at a high level, friendship & travel experiences throughout.
VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE
Please outline any volunteering experience you have gained within curling and/or elsewhere.
I have held various curling club office-bearer positions throughout my time curling. I am Past President of Galston Haymouth Curling Club & Ayr Curling Club. I volunteered during my time of employment with Ayr College to work with & mentor mentally & physically handicapped adults. I also volunteered during the same period to act as Liaison Officer for school leavers looking to commence careers in the building trade. I was a member of my local rotary club raising funds for both local & international charities.
