School Visit Prize for St Thomas RC

In November 2021, Scottish Curling launched the new Curling Resource Pack for Primary Schools to mark National Curling Day. As part of the launch, schools were invited to apply for the resource and also enter a competition to win a visit from a GB curler.

Over 500 schools entered the competition, and the winner, chosen at random, was St Thomas RC Primary School in Keith, Moray.

Following a series of delays due to COVID, the school finally received their visit from Scott Andrews on Friday 18th March. The school with only 52 pupils had been working on their floor curling and learning all about the sport in the weeks leading up to the visit. The P5-7 class had also had a visit to Moray Leisure Centre for an on ice experience which has already seen some pupils join the junior club.

The visit started with a school assembly where pupils and teachers were able to learn about Scott’s curling story and see some of the equipment used in the sport. Following the assembly, Scott visited each of the classes to have a chat with pupils about the sport, answer questions and let them see his collection of medals, including his Sochi Silver medal from 2014.

After lunch, pupils had a chance to show off their floor curling skills with both pupils and staff enjoying a miniature bonspiel, where the competition rivalry was papabile.
