SCOTLAND REACH PLAY-OFFS AT WORLD MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP 2024 ON DUO’S DEBUT
Scotland are being represented by Sophie Jackson and Duncan McFadzean at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2024, hosted in Östersund, Sweden from 20 to 27 April 2024. The duo finished sixth on their debut.
A rollercoaster start to the championship saw Scotland beat Czechia before losing out to Korea and once more take a win, this time versus Australia, to then be edged out by United States. A tough game versus Canada followed where the Canadians had the upper hand throughout and scored a massive six points under Power Play in End 7 to bring home a 12-5 win.
However, from that point onwards, Scotland were on a roll. They edged out Netherlands and saw off New Zealand with a four under Power Play. In the following fixture, the Scots had the brighter start and though China threatened a comeback, they held firm and bagged the win to keep their play-off hopes alive. With one session to go, Scotland knew they had to defeat unbeaten Sweden while hoping that United States lost to Canada. Indeed, three points under Power Play in End 7 brought a Scottish edge in a largely tight game versus the Swedes and with United States missing out, it was on to the play-offs for Sophie and Duncan.
Up against Switzerland in the qualification games, the match went back and forth until the Swiss scored four under Power Play in End 7, creating an advantage that Scotland could not quite respond to. With that, the Scots finished sixth overall, a great effort on the duo’s world mixed doubles debut.
