SCOTLAND SCRAPE PAST PLAY-OFFS AT WWHMDCC 2024
Scotland were being represented by Charlotte McKenna and Gary Smith at the SD Biosensor World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2024, hosted from 11 to 16 March 2024 in Gangneung, Korea. The duo finished fourth in their group and missed the play-offs.
The Scots were off to a tough start with an 11-3 defeat to eventual group winners Slovakia who took control with three successive steals in the first four ends and didn’t look back from there. In their next game, Scotland were a point up at the break, but Latvia played a great second half, stealing twice to expand their advantage, and snatched a 6-3 win.
By and large, there wasn’t much in it between Scotland and Poland in the following match, but a big four points in End 5 gave Poland the advantage and they brought it over the line. Again, the Scots put on a good show versus Estonia and it was all square with one end to go, but, coming down with hammer, Estonia bagged a decisive point to edge a 7-6 win.
The first Scottish win finally came in their fifth fixture. Türkiye were up by three points at the break, but Scotland embarked on a second half comeback that took them to a 7-5 success. Now with some momentum on their side, played a strong last game versus Norway and there was nothing separating the sides with one end to go. Scotland showed an excellent performance to steal a point and bag a 5-4 win.
Group A was incredibly tight with no less than four teams finishing on a two in four record. Scotland had the superior DSC to be ranked fourth in their group and tenth overall.
