TEAM HENDERSON AND TEAM STRAWHORN TRIUMPH AT GREENACRES JUNIOR MASTERS

Congratulations to Team Henderson (Fay Henderson, Robyn Munro, Holly Wilkie-Milne, Laura Watt) (Dumfries) and Team Strawhorn (Jack Strawhorn, Hamish Gallacher, Rory Macnair, Kaleb Johnston) (Dumfries) who triumphed at the Asham Under 21 Slam Greenacres Junior Masters.

WOMEN’S COMPETITION

Team Henderson went undefeated in the Women B section to secure their place in the play-offs. Facing A section runners-up Team Archibald (Erin Stewart, Katie Archibald, Tia Laurie, Katie Donald, Jessica Trotter), the Dumfries outfit used their hammer advantage to open with a two-points score. They went on to steal in Ends 2 and 3, extending their advantage to six points. Team Archibald could only respond with a single and Team Henderson brought an 11-1 win over the line after six ends of play.

The final versus Team Mitchell (Amy Mitchell, Robyn Mitchell, Hannah Farries, Kirsty Gallacher), themselves undefeated up to that point, was a similarly clean-cut affair. Team Henderson took a big advantage early on with a four in the opening end, forcing their Greenacres rivals to chase the game henceforth. A single score from Team Mitchell did little to close the gap and after a blank third end, Team Henderson doubled their points with another four. A single steal in End 5 effectively sealed the result and the teams shook hands after a blank sixth end, the final scores reading 9-1.

Meanwhile, Team Archibald took a 10-2 victory over Fentons’ Team Andell (Mia Andell, Annabelle Martin, Anna Howey, Phoenix Davies) in the game for third. A big score of seven in the second end gave the Greenacres side a comfortable lead and they managed their advantage to win after six ends.

MEN’S COMPETITION

Team Strawhorn too went undefeated in their section to progress to the play-offs as table toppers. Their semi-final against Moray’s Team Cameron (Gavin Cameron, Cameron Harkins, Jonathan Buchanan, Lewis Logan) aptly turned out to be the closest challenge yet. After two blanks, Team Strawhorn finally broke the deadlock with a deuce in End 3. Team Cameron immediately halved their deficit and the sides traded singles to make it 3-2 in favour of Team Strawhorn after six ends. After a blank seventh, the Moray outfit managed to steal one in the final regular end to level the scores and take the game to a crucial extra end. Team Strawhorn stayed composed and used the hammer advantage to secure a single point and a narrow 4-3 win.

Undefeated Team O. Carson (Orrin Carson, Logan Carson, Archie Hyslop, Charlie Gibb) opened the scoring in the final with two in the opening end. Team Strawhorn responded and the scores were level again on 3-3 after four ends. A couple of singles on both sides meant nothing could separate the teams after regular play and the game went all the way to a vital extra end. Once more, Team Strawhorn kept their composure and got a three on the board to beat their Dumfries rivals by eight points to five.

Meanwhile in the third versus fourth play-off Team Cameron secured a 5-4 win over Team Thomson (Arran Thomson, Lewis McCabe, Jamie Gorton, Sam McConnachie, William Gorton) (Perth). A deuce in End 6 proved decisive for the Moray squad in a game that otherwise only saw singles.
