TEAM RUTHERFORD WIN FINAL ASHAM U17 SLAM OF THE SEASON
Many congratulations to Team Rutherford (Finlay Rutherford, Tom Cormack, Cameron Lindsay, Rory Stevenson) (Kinross) who won the last Asham Under 17 Slam of the season, held at Dewars Centre, Perth. They beat Team Soutar (Callie Soutar, Eva Hare, Holly Clemie, Alison Hamilton) (Forfar) in an exciting final that was all square until the last end.
Team Rutherford were flying through Section D, winning all of their four games to progress to the High Road play-offs as table toppers. Likewise, Team Scanstone (Calum Skea, Donald Robertson, Jamie Jones, Ben Watson) (Forfar) were in excellent form from the get-go and went unbeaten in Section A while Team Soutar achieved the same feat in Section B.
Section C, however, wasn’t as straight forward. Team Zen Curling (George Watmough, Oliver Ablett, Declan McCann, Ollie Johnson, Niall McLoughlin) (Flower Bowl) started their campaign with two wins but then fell to defeat in their third game. Meanwhile, Team Hall (Andrew Hall, Murray Gibb, Erin Roche, Alistair Tuck) (Lanarkshire) bounced back from an opening defeat with two successive wins. Tied on points, Team Zen Curling and Team Hall played their final group fixture against each other for progression in the High Road. Three points in End 5 eventually proved the difference for Team Zen Curling who bagged a 5-3 win to top the Section C table.
Team Scanstone and Team Rutherford were tied level after two ends into their semi-final, but when Team Rutherford managed to force a single in End 3 and followed it up with a score of three themselves, they took the advantage. Team Scanstone blanked the fifth end to try do something with hammer in the last, but they were held to a single and a 5-4 win went to Team Rutherford.
In the other semi-final, Team Soutar were off to an excellent start with three points from the opening end. They followed it up with steals in the next four, prompting Team Zen Curling to offer handshakes after five ends played and with 13-0 on the board.
Team Soutar opened the final with a two and, after a blank second end, managed to hold Team Rutherford to a single in the third. However, the Kinross side stole two in the fourth to take the lead and got the force themselves in the fifth, meaning it was all square again with one end to go. Coming down with hammer, Team Rutherford bagged a deuce that earned them a 5-3 win.
In the play-off for third, Team Scanstone took control with three successive steals the led them to a 7-1 win over Team Zen Curling.
