TEAMS LAURIE AND CARSON WIN OPENING ASHAM U21 SLAM AT GREENACRES

Many congratulations to Team Laurie (Tia Laurie, Hannah Farries, Holly Burke, Kirsty Gallacher, Robyn Mitchell) and Team O Carson (Orrin Carson, Logan Carson, Archie Hyslop, Charlie Gibb) who triumphed at the Asham Under 21 Slam at Greenacres.

WOMEN’S COMPETITION

Team Laurie played an excellent opening day, winning both their games comfortably. This trend continued on Saturday when they went on to collect another two victories and progressed to the semi-finals with a perfect record.

However, things were tight for runner-up position. While Teams Morris (Carla Morris, Megan Hutchison, Chloe McNaughton, Maya Dear) and Seftor (Amy Seftor, Clare Cassells, Julie Broadwood, Rachel Eadie), who had won their respective game on Day 1,  started Day 2 with defeats, Team Huntly (Tamzin Smith, Layla Huntly, Erin McCluskey, Callie McMinn) were coming into form. With all section draws in the books, Teams Huntly and Seftor were both on two in two records, the former going through on direct comparison.

The other section was dominated by Team Soutar (Callie Soutar, Eva Hare, Holly Clemie, Alison Hamilton) who progressed with a perfect four in four record. Runner-up was straight forward with Team Thomson (Cara Thomson, Islay McKenzie, Samantha Torrance, Sophie Hamilton) sitting on three in one, their only defeat coming to Team Soutar.

On to the semi-finals where things played out the way the section games suggested. Team Laurie stormed to a 9-1 win over Team Thomson while Team Soutar saw off Team Huntly.

Everything was set for a showdown between the two undefeated teams and the final certainly delivered on the anticipation. The scores were tied at half time, and with only single points apiece in the next ends, nothing could separate the teams with two to go. Team Soutar were first to strike and secured two in End 7 to pile on the pressure. Team Laurie, however, remained composed and got a three on the board in the last end to snatch a 7-6 win.

In the play-off for third, Team Huntly got the better of Team Thomson by eight points to seven. Full results are available on the competitions page here.

MEN’S COMPETITION

Section A was dominated by Team Strawhorn (Jack Strawhorn, Hamish Gallacher, Kaleb Johnston, Rory Macnair) who won their four games comfortably and progressed to the semi-finals with a perfect record. In the fight for second, the opening fixture between Team Brewster (Ethan Brewster, Sam Lynch, Luke Perras, Fraser Riddoch, Mark Lyon) and Team Thomson (Arran Thomson, Stewart Kyle, Lewis, McCabe, Sam McConnachie), won by the former, would prove crucial, Team Brewster eventually going through on a three in one record while Team Thomson just missed out on two in two.

Things were less straight forward in Section B. No less than three sides ended up on the same record, Team O Carson, Team R Craik (Ross Craik, Scott Hyslop, Jack Carrick, Struan Carson), and Team Swanston (Fraser Swanston, Jack McDonald, Jamie Rankin, Jonathan Blair) all sitting on three in one. With their single defeats all coming to one another, the ranking went to DSA. Team O Carson just snatched top ahead of Team R Craik while Team Thomson missed out.

Up next were the semi-finals. Team O Carson steered to a well-controlled 6-1 win over Team Brewster while Team Strawhorn kept their perfect record going with a 5-4 win over Team R Craik.

And so the final went down between Teams Strawhorn and O Carson. There was nothing in it at half time, but Team O Carson found an extra gear at the restart. Having scored two in End 5, they went on to steal deuces in the next two and Team Strawhorn eventually called it a day with an end to spare, 9-3 the final scoreline.

Meanwhile, Team R Craik got the better of Team Brewster in the play-off for third. Full results are available on the competitions page here.
