Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2018, Tallinn, Estonia

Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships, Tallinn, Estonia

16th-24th November

The European Curling Championships reaches its climax this weekend as teams battle for medals and places at this season’s World Championships and new World Qualification Event and Scotland are still in the mix for European gold.

On the men’s side, Team Mouat have performed exceptionally well in their first European outing qualifying for the playoffs in second place. They finished with a record of 7 wins and 2 losses. Tonight they will play Italy in the semi-final looking to reach their first European final and Scotland’s second in a row. Having defeated Italy in the round robin, spirits will be high but that game went all the way to an extra end so the Scots will be wary of this up and coming Italian side. Sweden play Germany in the other semi-final. The bronze medal game is on Friday night and the gold medal game on Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately, Eve Muirhead and her team will not feature in the playoff stages which means her remarkable run of consecutive medals stops at 8. They fought valiantly in a must-win game against the undefeated Swiss team, taking them right to an extra end before losing 6-5. That means that the Scots end their campaign on a record of 4 wins and 5 losses and finish in 6th place. Team Muirhead may well look back on a week of what might have been but they have at least done enough to secure Scotland’s place at the 2019 World Women’s Championship in Denmark.

Asham Under 17 Slam, The Baljaffray, Greenacres Curling Rink

24th-25th November

The third Asham Under 17 Slam takes place this weekend at Greenacres Curling Rink as 22 teams will battle for The Baljaffray Trophy and more points in their quest to book their flights to Fussen for the WCF Summer Camp. Teams will play 6 end games across 5 sections on Saturday before high road and low road playoff stages on Sunday.

Lockerbie champions Team Bryce are back to full strength with their skip re-joining their ranks and will be hoping to add another title to their haul this season. Keep up to date with all the scores from the weekend here

Nordic Junior Curling Tour, Copenhagen

23rd – 25th November

This weekend sees two of our young teams travel to Copenhagen for the Foxglide supported Nordic Junior Curling Tour Event in Hvidovre Curling Club. Teams Davie and Team Whyte (minus Ross who is of course 5th man at the Europeans with Team Mouat) are accompanied by Coaches Andrew Barr and David Ramsay. Lisa, (with her solid line up of Kirsty Barr, Anna Skuse and Emma Barr) no doubt hopes to go one better and win this year after her runner up spot in 2018.  Team Whyte with Stewart Kyle in to replace Ross will see them line up probably with James Craik in the head, Duncan on last stone and Euan Kyle and Stewart  a really powerful front end.

Interestingly coach time outs are encouraged in the NJCT and at the coaches instigation too, so we’ll probably see Andrew and Rambo hammering on the glass to get down there. Lets hope the advice is well received!

The Scottish Academy appreciates the financial support from Alan Mitchell of Foxglide,  to the NJCT, the Academy programme in general  and to this event in particular, which allows these two teams such an opportunity.
