The Scottish Disability Sport (SDS) AGM and Annual Awards Ceremony was held on Wednesday 21st September at the Windelstrae Hotel in Kinross. The AGM provides SDS members with the opportunity to reflect on the number of sporting successes achieved throughout the year and a prominent feature at this years event was the silver medal winning performance of the Scotland Team at the World Wheelchair Curling Championships in theCzechRepublic. Attendees were treated to a keynote presentation from Iain Gowans, Classification Manager for London 2012 where the former Scottish Paralympic swimmer reflected on his personal experiences within disability sport. Closing remarks were by Shona Robison MSP; Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport who spoke of the importance of inclusion within the delivery of sporting pathways and the need to ensure opportunities are provided for athletes and players irrespective of their ability or disability.

As ever, the most keenly anticipated aspect of the evening is the Annual Awards Ceremony where SDS recognises the brilliant sporting achievements of its athletes and players throughout the year. The most coveted of which is the Gordon Brown Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the Athlete’s Athlete of the Year Award. This award is particularly special as it is voted for by fellow athletes and players and awarded to the individual who has excelled at the highest level in their sport. This year’s winner was Aileen Neilson who successfully skipped the Scotland Team to a brilliant silver medal at the World Wheelchair Curling Championships in theCzechRepublicearlier this year. Neilson was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award by her fellow wheelchair curlers during the World Championships.
