Open Recruitment of the Chair for the Board of Directors
Scottish Curling’s Board of directors are starting the process for the open recruitment of a Chair to join them as a director. By “open” we mean that candidates can be members of Scottish Curling/RCCC or can come from any background, not requiring any connection with the organisation or the sport of curling. What is important is that candidates should have knowledge and experience of leading organisations, building consensus, stakeholder management, managing senior staff and understanding of good governance principles.
The Board of directors is responsible collectively for developing the strategy and managing the affairs of Scottish Curling and overseeing all business conducted by the Chief Executive Officer and the staff and volunteers. The Board sets strategic and financial policy direction, whilst ensuring annual business plans and budgets are delivered to standard. The Board is responsible for ensuring that the highest levels of corporate governance are employed within the whole organisation.
The Chair of the Board of directors will be appointed by the directors for a term of up to three years. Upon a successful open re-application process, the Chair may be appointed for a second term of three years.
In addition to the general responsibilities of all directors of the company, the following apply to the Chair. The directors and Chair of Scottish Curling are volunteer positions for which there is no remuneration. Reasonable out-of pocket expenses can be claimed in line with the relevant expenses policy.

Location: Remote with Travel (as Required)
Main Responsibilities
The Chair of the Board is responsible for:
- Providing leadership to the Board and ensuring its effectiveness.
- Drive and support the work of individual directors ensuring the participation and involvement of all.
- Setting the tone for good governance, strategic focus, and collective responsibility.
- Supporting and constructively challenging the Chief Executive Officer.
- Acting as an ambassador for Scottish Curling with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Representing the interests of Scottish Curling through nurtured and managed relationships with connected organisations (such as World Curling, British Curling, Sport Org, Scottish Curling Trust, UK Sport, Sport Scotland and any other Organisation that may be relevant)
- Establish the agenda and Chairing the meetings of the Board of directors
- Ensuring the Board fulfils its responsibilities to the membership.
- Upholding and promoting adherence to all policies agreed by the Board (including but not limited to the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, the Anti Corruption and Bribery Policy and the Whistleblowing Policy)
- Attend sub-committee meetings of the Board as appropriate

Time Commitment
On an annual basis, the Chair will normally attend scheduled meetings as described below, and other meetings as they arise:
- Up to 10 Scottish Curling Board meetings (3 hours)
- Internal sub-committee meetings as appropriate
- Pre-arranged internal strategy meetings as required
- Review meetings with external connected organisations as required
- Regular update meetings with the CEO, in person or by phone/online
Other Responsibilities
The Chair may also be required to become involved in resolution of matters regarding complaints, discipline or grievances in relation to staff or members, should satisfactory outcomes not be achieved through internal procedures.
There may also be times when the Chair may be required to become involved in resolution of Safeguarding and Anti-Doping issues that arise within the organisation, should satisfactory outcomes not be achieved through internal procedures.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate some, or all, of the following criteria:
Knowledge & Experience:
- Significant experience of chairing boards or senior committees.
- Strong leadership and facilitation skills.
- A deep understanding of governance and Board effectiveness.
- Experience of strategic leadership at a senior level.
- Corporate networking and relationship building
Skills:
- Ability to provide direction, leadership and strategic vision
- Good interpersonal and diplomatic skills
- Ability to develop consensus, negotiate and influence peers
- Excellent communication skills
Personal Qualities:
- Promote and uphold high standards of integrity and ethical standards – in line with the Nolan Standards of Ethics.
- Support other directors in their roles on the board while monitoring their own conduct
- Contribute to discussion, be inquisitive and willing to challenge others.
- Have the ability to be an advocate for Scottish Curling and to promote the organisation to internal and external stakeholders
