Our Wheelchair Athletes win Scottish Sport Award

Many congratulations to our Scottish Curling wheelchair athletes, for winning big at The Sunday Mail Sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards in Glasgow last night.

The awards recognise excellence throughout Scottish sports by awarding our sportsmen, women and teams for their outstanding achievements throughout 2019.

The team, or course, won silver medals at the World Championship in March 2019 on home ice in Stirling, and were nominated in the Disability Sport Category, alongside Neil Fachie (cycling) and Toni Shaw (swimming).

Aileen Neilson, Hugh Nibloe, David Melrose, Robert McPherson and alternate Gary Logan were all in attendance at the ceremony.  They were joined by Sheila Swan (Coach), Kenny More (Analyst), Craig More (Physiotherapist), Irene Riach (Nutritionist) and Harry Booker (Strength and Conditioning Coach).

“It was fantastic to be nominated for this award but to actually win it really means a lot to the whole team as well as the support staff and the organisations who have worked with us.  They have been with us not only when we have been on the podium but more importantly when we haven’t been on the podium as they have supported us through the ups and downs for many years.”

“We have worked really hard since Sheila Swan came on as our coach and we returned to the top level and got onto the podium in 2017.  Playing in front of the home crowd in March of this year at the World Championship in Scotland has to be one of the highlights of my career, with loads of friends and family there supporting us was really special.“

“I was inspired in 2005 when the world championships was last hosted in Scotland and I hope we have inspired people in Scotland this year. “

“The squad leave tomorrow to compete in a tournament in Sweden are working really hard in preparation for the next world championships in Switzerland in the new year.”
