Parasport Get Active with Curling

Para Try Curling Festival – Friday 22nd October – Curl Edinburgh

Scottish Curling in partnership with Parasport and Lothian Wheelchair Curling Club are thrilled to be running a free Para Try Curling event on the afternoon of Friday 22nd October at Curl Edinburgh.

The event is part of the “Get Active with” series which Parasport is running in partnership with Toyota. The series teaming up with five Parasport clubs nationwide to deliver in person sport taster experiences, with the ultimate aim of connecting disabled people with local ways to get active and highlighting further opportunities via Parasport.

“Try Curling” is the introductory curling programme that runs within ice rinks across Scotland. During the event we will be running specially adapted para Try Curling sessions to allow people of all ability levels to experience curling. The event is open to people with all disabilities who are in secondary school or older.

During the day we will also have special appearances and visits from some of Scotland and Great Britain’s top para Curlers including Aileen Neilson (pictured). Aileen was the first woman to skip a wheelchair curling team in either the Paralympic Games (2010) or World Championships (2011) and has successfully won 4 World and Paralympic medals including Bronze from the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Games.

What to expect from the sessions

Each session will be 60 minutes including around 45 minutes of “on-ice” time. On arrival at the venue, all participants will be registered and directed to the session meeting point. Scottish Curling qualified coaches will then deliver a fun and interactive Try Curling session.

Each session will consist of:

  • Warm-up
  • Moving around; getting comfortable and confident on the ice
  • Introduction to curling delivery and opportunity to practice
  • Introduction to sweeping and opportunity to practice
  • Full length curling delivery; how far can you send the stone?
  • Cool-down

What to wear

Participants (and spectators) should wear warm clothing as the ice rink will be cold (hats, gloves, and scarves are recommended for those effected by the cold). Clothing should be loose fitting to allow for movement and participants should wear clean, flat, rubber soled shoes (trainers are ideal) to change into for going onto the ice. Those in wheelchairs will be assisted to clean their wheels before getting onto the ice.

All equipment will be supplied including brushes and sliders. Delivery sticks allow stones to be delivered from a standing position or wheelchair and will be available for those with mobility issues.

Event registration is available via the form at the bottom of this page.
