Remembering Past President Bill Muirhead

Bill Muirhead, RCCC President (1985-86) and an outstanding curler of his generation, has died at the age of 92.

He represented Scotland on three occasions at the World Championships, reaching the final twice.

His six wins in the Perth Open, one Perth Masters, three Dundee Opens, two Edinburgh Internationals, one Kirkcaldy Open, one Matthew Templeton, two Rink Championships and the Norsk Hydro Haig Seniors were among his most notable victories.

He travelled abroad extensively, curling many times in Switzerland, including winning the Dolly Cup, the Silver Box and participating four times in the prestigious C.B.C. television series in Canada. Bill was Assistant National Coach, then National Coach and, having acted as Chief Umpire for three World Ladies’ Curling Championships, was on the International Curling Federation list of approved Umpires.

He started curling in the late 1940’s playing with his father for Glenfarg Curling Club, being made an Honorary Member of that Club in 1977. Bill joined St Martins Curling Club in 1960 and became its President in 1980.  He was mainly responsible for rejuvenating the Club and at that time St Martin’s Club were proud to have seven members who had represented their country in international events. His Mother Club were delighted at Bill’s election as President of the RCCC and organised a dinner in his honour.

He is remembered by all who played against him as having great ability to read the ice and was quick to make decisions on which shot to play next.

A true gentleman and a great sport, always encouraging others.

Bill is survived by his wife Nan, and three daughters who all curled, his youngest daughter Billie-May having represented Scotland in the World Ladies’ Curling Championship in Moose Jaw in 1983.
