ROBYN MUNRO AND ANGUS BRYCE STORM TO SCOTTISH JUNIOR MIXED DOUBLES TITLE
Congratulations to Robyn Munro and Angus Bryce who played an outstanding tournament to clinch the Scottish Junior Mixed Doubles title. The duo went unbeaten throughout and won all their play-off matches to nil, including the final versus Chloe McNaughton and Harry Gow.
A stacked and indeed packed field took to the ice in Dumfries with 30 doubles pairs competing in six sections. Only eight duos progressed to the quarter-finals: Munro/Bryce, McNaughton/Gow, Amy Mitchell and Kaleb Johnston as well as Cara Thomson and Arran Thomson, all unbeaten so far, secured their spots directly, courtesy of their immaculate section records. They were joined by Holly Hamilton and Hamish Gallacher, Robyn Mitchell and Jack Strawhorn, Jessica Trotter and Archie Hyslop, and Holly Wilkie-Milne and Struan Carson who came through the play-offs.
Munro/Bryce made short work of Hamilton/Gallacher, seeing them off 6-0 after five ends. Mitchell/Johnston just held a late charge from Trotter/Hyslop to win 9-8 while McNaughton/Gow edged it 10-7 over Mitchell/Strawhorn. In the remaining quarter-final, Wilkie-Milne/Carson gathered momentum in the late stages to beat Thomson/Thomson 10-7.
Next up, semi-finals. Munro/Bryce earned themselves a long break before the final later the same day, taking a more than comprehensive 9-0 win after six ends over Mitchell/Johnston. The second semi-final was far less clear cut though. McNaughton/Gow had a bright start with three in the opening end, but, taking singles in Ends 2, 3, and 4, Wilkie-Milne/Carson equalised. Another three went on McNaughton/Gow’s tally which Wilkie-Milne/Carson could only answer with a two. This would prove decisive as the teams traded singles in the last two ends, meaning McNaughton/Gow won the encounter by a point.
A fairly quiet start to the final saw Munro/Bryce steal a single in the opening end, but they immediately dealt punches afterwards. A five-points steal in End 2 gave them a big advantage and a subsequent steal of three firmly took the sting out of the game. Another single steal followed just before the break and when Munro/Bryce opened the second half with a stolen deuce, McNaughton/Gow opted to shake hands early.
