STIRLING OVERCOME LANARKSHIRE TO CLINCH MAXWELL TROPHY
Congratulations to Stirling who secured the Maxwell Trophy at Ayr Ice Rink. They saw off Lanarkshire on two wins to one to become the 2022-23 champions.
A total of 10 teams, divided into two sections, took on the Maxwell Trophy finals day. Greenacres and Lanarkshire emerged from Section A to the play-offs while Kinross and Stirling came through Section B. The first semi-final saw Stirling take on Greenacres, the former taking a clean sweep of three wins. Lanarkshire meanwhile bagged two wins over Kinross before the third encounter was called a draw.
On to the final which very much was a tale of three games. Stirling 1 gradually built an advantage in the first half before they stormed to a 14-3 win over Lanarkshire 1 at the restart. On the other sheet, Lanarkshire 3 was well in control against Stirling 3 throughout and collected a 9-3 triumph. The encounter between the 2 teams stood in stark contrast to the comprehensive results with proceedings tight until the end. Lanarkshire 2 led by a point after five ends, but Stirling 2 fought back with a big three that gave them the advantage. However, the Lanarkshire side responded by copying the feat and reinstating their one-point lead with one end to go. Stirling 2 were coming down with hammer and used it perfectly to get two on the board for the win.
