Sweeping Success: A New Wave of Curling Umpires Hits the Ice

The Junior Mixed Doubles Championships didn’t just deliver great competition last weekend, it marked the culmination of one of Scottish Curling’s most successful umpire recruitment campaigns in recent years. 

Launched at the end of last year and supported by the Scottish Curling Trust, the Anne Malcolm Legacy and the Leslie Ingram-Brown Fund, this new Game Umpire initiative has made a powerful impact. Fourteen participants took part, the highest attendance in nine years and a clear sign that momentum is building. 

But the real success lies in the experience itself. 

Participants spoke passionately about the value of stepping into an umpiring role, not just at a competitive level, but within their own clubs. One attendee shared:
“I would certainly encourage others—even if not taking it to a serious level, it helps at club level too, keeping the rules and spirit of curling alive.” 

Another added simply:
“Give it a try—it’s interesting and enjoyable.” 

The opportunity to be mentored at competitions also proved invaluable. Trainees were supported by experienced Chief Umpires, gaining hands-on experience in real settings. As one participant reflected:
“The CUs at the competitions were very encouraging and helpful, and allowed me to fill in line scores and update web scores.” 

This initiative hasn’t just trained new umpires—it has inspired a new generation to get involved, build confidence, and contribute to the future of the sport. 

And the journey doesn’t stop here—another course is already planned for later this year.
