Time for a third generation of Future Leaders

We are excited to announce the third intake of our Scottish Curling ‘Future Leaders’ initiative.

The programme was highlighted as a good model for other organisations to follow, by sportscotland, through a well-received presentation during its Regional Networking Event roadshow.

We are looking for people aged 16 to 24, in whom we will invest/support and who will help us as we shape the future of Scottish Curling. Young people contribute hugely to sport and we will be recruiting around five people in this cohort who will be supported on their leadership journey by an SC staff mentor and in the first few months of the journey, benefit from the experience of Future Leaders from cohort two. Applications close on 31st August.

Background

Scottish Curling sees an opportunity to provide a platform for young people to voice their opinions about the sport and become future Scottish Curling leaders and ambassadors. There is no better way to understand barriers, ideas and innovation than to speak to young people in the sport directly. Scottish Curling will look at development through the lens of young people as well as provide opportunities for leadership skill acquisition and implementation.

Vision of Scottish Curling Future Leaders

To support future leaders to develop new life skills whilst providing them with experiences that will increase their confidence
To support young people to become leaders, and to motivate and inspire others to get involved in curling
To provide a platform for young people to share their views and influence the future of Scottish Curling

What will Future Leaders do?

Future Leaders is a national programme, encouraging and enabling networking with new friends, athletes and inspirational people involved in curling. Each of the Future Leaders will receive a bespoke development programme, tailored to their particular skills and interests.

The Future Leaders will meet together as a group two to three times in the year and the first two cohorts have developed a ‘Manifesto’. They always look to discuss and share ideas on the following:

Barriers to participation in curling
How to encourage people to participate in curling
Club vision and direction
Social media and communication in clubs
Developing curlers – pathway and performance

Future Leaders will become involved in a variety of opportunities such as:

Involvement in Event Management – domestic and international
Coaching and Officiating
Media & Communications– promoting the sport through a variety of social media channels

Support and guidance will be provided by Scottish Curling staff and key volunteers.

Becoming a Future Leader is a great way to get an insight into Scottish Curling and to provide you with experiences that will develop your skills including organisation, communication, presentation, event management and leadership. It may also provide a different perspective to career opportunities.

As a role model and leader of young people, you will be able to influence and shape decision making whilst gaining skills that will enhance your CV.

How can I become a Scottish Curling Future Leader?

If you are aged 16 to 24 and keen to shape the future of Scottish Curling, we want to hear from you!

Ideally you will be:

Actively engaged in the sport
A member of a curling club
Enthusiastic and passionate about curling
Driven and have ambitions to be a leader within the Scottish Curling community in the future
Willing and able to commit up to two hours per week
